Exhibition: Jeanne Susplugas “I Was in the Park When Everything Rocked”

From 29 May to 29 August 2021, the Musée en plein air du Sart Tilman will be presenting an exhibition by the French artist Jeanne Susplugas, who will be exhibiting a wide range of works in the Agora area of the university campus. From three-dimensional installations to street posters, murals and sound, Jeanne Susplugas presents a series of evocations of the twists and turns of the human soul: fears, obsessions, addictions, intimate questioning… Very often inspired by everyday motifs, the installations provoke an attractive familiarity in the visitors’ minds, tinged with a bittersweet feeling that can sometimes turn into a cold and grating impression.

The medical world, which is regularly evoked in the artist’s works, is not without reminding us of the current health context. One example is the installation of shoes covered with hospital slippers placed on a lawn, which evokes the prevailing hygienism. Similarly, a new version of the well-known Maison malade, totally full of medicine boxes, underlines in an unusual way the over-consumption of these products that we sometimes make. The motif of the house comes up again in Flying house, an installation made up of various everyday objects linked to a small house that is intended to be a portrait drawn up on the basis of the question: “what would you take if you had to leave the place where you live in a hurry with the idea of never returning? “. As for the sound works, whose content has been collected over many years, they reveal our little flaws and obsessions. They can be heard in installations that invite you to daydream with Sieste littéraire or to party (a party that turned out badly) with Little Helpers and Disco Ball.

The exhibition will also be the occasion for the inauguration of two monumental murals created in situ by the artist with the help of the painting students of the École Supérieure des Arts de la Ville de Liège in the corridors of the Grands amphithéâtres at the Sart Tilman. Forêt généalogique III is part of a series of paintings of forests made up of family trees where the names of individuals have been replaced by their pathologies. In Your Brain sketches a portrait through neuronal connections linking thoughts: are they the artist’s or ours?
